About the workshop

This interactive workshop focuses on the linguistic and communication aspects of the clinical interview, and targets a number of key skills, such as rapport building, empathy expression, data gathering, interview management, conducting an effective mental state examination, giving information and negotiating treatment. The content of this workshop covers at east three domains introduced in the OCA: data gathering process, data gathering content and mental state examination. Senior Fellows, an applied linguist and an educator will be able to present a range of perspectives on these crucial domains of the clinical interview.

The workshop will give participants an opportunity to re# ect on their current practices, build on their experiences and knowledge, and ultimately better prepare for work in the Australian medical context.

Participants will receive feedback on their strengths and weaknesses, observe and learn tips from senior colleagues, learn various techniques from their peers, develop a number of strategies to apply in their clinical practice, and increase their con! dence and skills in approaching the OCA.

The presenting team includes Dr David Fenn, Dr Olga Maxwell, Ms Belinda Bull and Dr Fionnuala Dunne.

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists has received Australian Government funding under the Specialist Training Program to deliver the ‘Communication and interview skills for SIMGs in psychiatry’ workshop.
