The Sunshine Coast Private Hospital’s Older Persons Program is an outpatient program designed to meet the needs of those over 65 who are experiencing a mental health issue such as depression or anxiety.

Introduction

The Sunshine Coast Private Hospital’s Cooinda Mental Health Service provides a comprehensive range of inpatient and outpatient services and is located at The Sunshine Coast Private Hospital at Buderim. Our service provides treatment programs for a range of common mental health problems that anyone can suffer at any point in life.

Late adulthood can be particularly challenging due to stressful life events such as retirement, re-location, financial constraints, physical illnesses, and changing relationships. These challenges can become overwhelming and can lead to common mental health problems such as depression or anxiety.

About the program

The Older Persons Program is designed to help people 65 and over to manage common mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, grief, and adjustment to major life changes. The program uses a specific form of treatment called Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which is the most effective form of psychological therapy.

Participation in the Older Persons Program requires that you attend group therapy for one day per week for six consecutive weeks. The group size is a minimum of five people and a maximum of 10. The main objectives of this program include:

  • Challenge common prejudices associated with late adulthood
  • Gain a deeper understanding of the challenges associated with late adulthood
  • Learn specific strategies that can help you manage these challenges
  • Build a support network with other group members and links to relevant outside agencies and resources

If required, you can also access a psychologist for individual therapy sessions to work through issues in private.

Multidisciplinary team

Our multidisciplinary team consists of highly skilled mental health professionals with a special interest in working with people 65 and over.
